Ambassador Lu Shumin Speaks at the Canadian Club of Ottawa Luncheon
2006/11/22

On 21 November, Ambassador LU Shumin was invited to give a keynote speech entitled "China's Peaceful Development and China-Canada Relations" at a well-attended luncheon hosted by the Canadian Club of Ottawa.

Ambassador Lu first briefed the fully-packed audience on China's tremendous progress in various sectors since the introduction of the country's reform and opening-up some 30 years ago. He particularly elaborated on China's initiatives on striving for a harmonious society at home and a harmonious world abroad. He then reviewed the history of China-Canada relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties 36 years ago, emphasizing that it is natural for countries like China and Canada, different in many aspects, not seeing eye to eye with each other on certain issues. But instead of pointing fingers at each other, the two sides should engage themselves in close and sincere dialogue based on equality and mutual respect with a view to deepening mutual understanding and trust. He stressed that China values its relations with Canada and is ready to work with the Canadian side to further strengthen friendly relations and cooperation in various areas. It is not only in the common interest of the two countries and two peoples, but will contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in the region and the world at large. Ambassador Lu also took questions from the audience on bilateral, global and regional issues.

The speech was well-received among an audience of almost 400 from all walks of life. They said they have benefited a great deal from it and are of the view that the two countries should work together for the continuous development of their friendly relations and cooperation.

Local media including CBC, CTV, CFMT, the Globe and Mail etc., covered the event, some even televising it live.
