Information for Document Authentication and Notarization
2010/01/01

1. All documents emanating from Canada must be legalized by the Embassy or Consulate General of China in Canada before being used in China. An application form must be completed when applying for document legalization at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate General.

2. Overseas Chinese residing in Ottawa region, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, may come to the Embassy of China in Ottawa in person for the legalization of documents such as power of attorney (only for Chinese citizens), statement and living certificate (for both the Chinese citizens and the Canadian citizens of Chinese origin). Upon application, personal identification, i.e. valid passport or citizenship certificate, permanent resident card or study/work permit are required. For legalization of documents concerning estate and properties, ownership certificate is required. 3. Documents such as affidavit of marital status certificate, student's admission paper, personal identification and documents concerning adoption, court appeal, commercial activities, estate and properties, etc. could be authenticated by the embassy of China in Ottawa only after being notarized by a notary office and certified by the Legal Advisory Division of Department of Foreign Affairs of Canada (125 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, Tel: 613-9950119) or the Secretaire de la Chambre des Notarires de Quebec (800 Place Victoria, Montreal,Tel:514-8791793).

4. Documents for authentication must be translated into English or Chinese. To obtain authenticated documents for adoption, birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce certificate and death certificate are not necessarily to be translated into English or Chinese. For other purposes, such as marriage, renouncement of property etc., these above-mentioned certificates should be translated into English or Chinese.

5. Fees

Civil documents----------------------------------------- 30 CAD

Commercial/Property documents--------------------- 60 CAD

6. Document legalization takes about 4 working days. For special cases, rush service is available with extra charge: for the same day service, extra 50 Canadian dollars per document; for the second or third day service, extra 35 Canadian dollars per document.
